[TIP]Make windows 10 login to the user account automatically when there is only one user account

[TIP]Make windows 10 login to the user account automatically when there is only one user account

With Windows 8,Microsoft Introduced a feature to login to your Windows using your Microsoft Account. The user needed to register the same when you installed your Windows for the first time.
A Windows with a Microsoft account brings many advantages like getting modern apps from store, more security etc.
However, with the same the user needs to enter his Microsoft account credentials every time he/she logs in.When the password is big enough,it may cause headache.
If you are the only user of computer, than this article should increase your ease.By the following steps, windows would automatically login to your user account eliminating the need of a password.

Here's how to

  1. Open Run dialog box by Pressing Win key+R simalaneously.
  2. Type in control userpasswords2 in the run dialog box.
  3. Uncheck "users must enter a username and password while entering this computer"
  4. Click OK and restart.
Now windows would automatically login to your account and boot to your desktop. However, this might cause a bit insecurity to your PC especially if the PC is used by someone else to and you do not want to give access to a specific person.

[Confirmed] Microsoft says Windows 10 Anniversary Update is coming August 2nd

The second major update to windows 10-widely called Anniversary update was introduced first by Microsoft in Build conference 2016.That time the Executive VP said that Anniversary update would be releasing this summer itself-although no date is/was provided by MS.
Now,Microsoft Accidentally wrote a blog post with a headline only, tiled "Microsoft announces Windows 10 Anniversary Update available Aug. 2" (You can see the page here) and pulled the page moments later. However,it was too late that it wasn't noticed by anyone. It's possible that Microsoft just got the date wrong, but, more likely than not, Microsoft seems to have just clicked the publish button earlier than it meant to.Here is a related screenshot:

update would be free to people running windows 10 already, but not for those who are running any less than 10 like 7,8 etc as the free offer ends 3 days before the accidentally released date.
Here is the change-log till now about what is new in Anniversary update:

How to do a repair Install using a windows 10 ISO to fix a broken windows

If your Windows 10 installation is behaving unusually such as broken built in modern applications, you can perform a repair install to fix the problem. A repair install installs Windows over the existing installation of Windows 10 on your hard disk, using your installation DVD or Installation media file. Performing this can repair broken system files and simaltaneously preserving files, applications etc.

  1. A windows 10 ISO file which you can download from here.Make sure it has the same language, edition and architecture. For how to download ISO file, see method #3 here.
  2. A backup of most important files.
  3. A Windows 10 OS that boots to the desktop-safe mode or advanced recovery options would not work.

Things that would be removed:

  1. All custom fonts and customized icons.
  2. All Windows updates. For example if you are using an ISO of build 15063.488, then you need to apply all the updates released from 15063.0.

  1. First of all open the Installation file downloaded from Microsoft's website. It would mount as a virtual drive-F:/ here and the contents would open in a new window.
  2. Then double click the setup.exe named file and it should show you preparing screen:

  3. The next step is to decide weather you want to download the updates. If you are doing a repair install to fix Windows update problems, choose skip checking for updates.
  4. The next step is to accept the license agreement:

  5. Then after some progress,it would prompt you with the confirmation.Make sure there is a tick against Keep files, apps and settings as shown:
  6. Click on next again and that would bring you to the installation screen. The computer would restart several times.
  7. You will get a progress screen after the second restart:

  8. Then when the progress gets to 100 percent, your PC would ask you to sign in first and then ask for OOBE-out of box experience that would ask you to finalize or customize your settings.

  9. Sign in to your account by entering your Password first:

When you have finished entering the password,it will show you the following screen:

  10. You can either use default settings or customize them according to your wish.If you wish to change the default ones, choose customize your settings at the bottom right.
  11. When finished,it would apply your settings and then it might ask you for signing in again.
  12. When signed in,you would boot to the desktop:

  13. That's it,you have done a repair Install. You can verify your build number by typing in winver in run dialog box.

For doing a repair Install, you can also use Media creation tool.It can be called as a more automated process as you have to do nothing. It would first download an ISO and then automatically do a repair Install.
  • First of all Download Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.
  • After the download finishes, open the tool and select upgrade this PC now as shown:

  • Sit back and relax, your computer would do the steps described above automatically till logging in.

  • The older windows installation on which the newer has taken place is moved to windows.old folder in drive where windows is installed. It might take gigs of space, especially when you have a large number of programs. It would delete automatically after a month, but if you want to delete that manually do the following

    • Open disk cleanup from start>All apps>Windows administrative tools.
    • Choose the drive where windows is installed, like C:/

    • After the first scan it does and shows the result, click cleanup system files at the bottom left.

    • Then check the box older windows installations in the list, like the following:
    • Then click on OK and windows would remove the files.

Run System File Checker and Deployment Image Servicing and management tool in windows 10

This is the guide to run System file check and DISM command to repair corrupted files in your OS:
  • Perform System File Check (SFC)
Follow the steps:

a. Press “Windows Key" to open Start menu

b. Type cmd without quotes in the search box.

c. On the left pane, right click on the “cmd” option and select “Run as Administrator”.

d. Type sfc /scannow’ without quotes and hit enter.

Afterwards you would get the output something like:
  • Windows did not find any integrity violations (a good thing)-No corruptions found
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and repaired them (a good thing)-Corrupt files found but repaired
  • Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some (or all) of them (not a good thing)-Corrupt files found but not repaired

Run Deployment Image Servicing and management tool

  • Open Command Prompt as indicated above.
  • In the Administrator: Command Prompt window, type the following commands. Press Enter key after each command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
(There is a space between every switch Indicated)
  • To  close the Administrator: Command prompt window, type Exit, and then press Enter.

If DISM is unable to repair corrupt files

If the message after running /RestoreHealth throws an error saying "The source files couldn't be found" then it requires an Installation media to corrupt the files. You should do the following steps if you have one*:
  • Double click the ISO file to mount it as a virtual drive.Note the letter of the virtual drive. It would have the same label and Image as F: in the following image:
  • Now enter the following command, replacing X  as the drive letter on which your ISO is mounted:
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:X:\sources\install.wim:1 /limitaccess
It might take hours to finish, depending on the level of corruption.

*You can download the Installation media from Microsoft website.

Windows XP's bliss wallpaper celebrates 20 years

Earlier today,Windows made a tweet about which announced 20 years of completion of Bliss wallpaper:

Bliss was one of the favourite wallpapers in the history of Windows and was clicked by  National Geographic photographer Charles O’Rear while on his way to see his girlfriend back in 1996.

Many people claim that it was somewhat photo-shopped, but O'Rear said it wasn't. O’Rear was on the road in St. Helena, California (located in the Napa Valley) when he saw the hill and clicked the photo.

Microsoft then licensed it from O' rear and made it ship with windows XP,which became the most popular windows wallpaper ever.

[14372 now]Windows 10 Insider preview build 14371 now available to fast ring Insiders

[14372 now]Windows 10 Insider preview build 14371 now available to fast ring Insiders

It is mid-week folks and a new PC build has been released by Microsoft for Windows Insiders who have opted fast ring. The build number has been incremented to 14371.Here is a more detailed explanation:

What's new

  • Activation troubleshooter:A new activation troubleshooter has been added in the settings app which would identify issues with activation of the Windows. For example you have a license key of Windows 10 Pro and you have installed Home edition, the troubleshooter would guide you how to correct and "upgrade/downgrade" your Windows.
  • Improvements to the digital licenses:Now a device having a digital license of Windows 10 can link their MSA accounts to the activation. If you already have a digital license,no need of doing anything,an automated process.

What's fixed

  • Fixed the issue causing Narrator to not launch when you toggle switch to "on" via Settings app -> Ease of access -> Narrator. Also fixed an issue where Narrator spoke at an unexpectedly accelerated rate.
  • Some improvements to learning speed for some slow cases on Japanese IME conversion, and prediction candidate quality. Fixed a short hang issue in Japanese IME which had been there since the Windows 10 November Update.
  • Improved the file download experience in Microsoft Edge. Now if you click on a download link from outside of Microsoft Edge that quickly opens and closes a tab, it'll open the Download Hub.
  • The 3D Display setting state will be preserved across build updates from 14371.
  •  Fixed an issue which was resulting in MPEG-2 videos showing the wrong duration in the Movies and TV app.
  •  Fixed an issue where "Scan options" text in Windows Defender would be clipped when high DPI (text scaling) was increased. Also where the offline scan event wasn't correctly formatted, and would show an exposed parameter (%1) in the Event Logs. Also fixed an issue resulting in the permissions dialog for a new extension possibly appearing under the Microsoft Edge favorites bar.
  • Fixed an issue where using the OneNote Web Clipper extension for Microsoft Edge on certain sites might result in an error saying "Please allow third party cookies in your browser".
  • Fixed an issue where the Action Center icon was clipped by the "Show Desktop" icon at 225% DPI. Also improved the resolution of the sound and network icons when using a non-standard DPI setting.
  • Added a small animation to Action Center for when notifications are deleted by the platform or dynamically re positioned, and generally improved Action Center reliability.
  • Fixed an issue resulting in the Clock and Calendar fly-out possibly showing a very old appointment when looking at today's events.
  •  Fixed an issue where certain keys in the Calculator app might stop working after switching between OCT and HEX mode. Also fixed an issue where hitting Enter in the calculator could result in the menu opening rather than calculating the current result.
  • Fixed an issue that could result in the VPN Settings page freezing after pressing Connect. Also fixed an issue where VPN might attempt to automatically connect over metered networks, despite "Allow VPN over metered connection" being turned off.
  • Fixed an issue where the icon for Settings was missing from the Background apps and Data usage settings pages. Also fixed an issue where content in the Windows Insider Program settings page might be truncated.
  • Fixed an issue where File Explorer would show two copies of any picture or screenshot taken on a phone while that phone was connected to the PC, despite only one file actually existing on the phone.
  • Fixed an issue where going between the All apps list and the tile grid of Start in Tablet mode could have a glitchy animation, or not have an animation at all.
  • Fixed an Issue where you might see duplicate "The VPN connection needs your sign-in info." notifications saved in the Action Center, when only one needed to be displayed.
  • Fixed an  issue which resulted in certain PDFs failing to print.
  • Fixed an Issue where a focus box was sometimes visible when launching the Start menu, which resulted in type to search not working.

Known Issues:

  • Clicking on networks or VPN connections in the network flyout on the taskbar doesn't launch the network settings page like it should.
As usual, the build would be available in Windows update. You can read more at Announcing Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 14371 for PC

Microsoft claims better battery results with Edge rather than others-More improvements coming in the Anniversary update

Microsoft claims better battery results with Edge rather than others-More improvements coming in the Anniversary update

With Windows 10,microsoft introduced Microsoft Edge as a web browser which is claimed to be the fastest web browser by Microsoft, alongside many other advantages over the other browsers-one is battery consumption.
A new video shown off by Microsoft shows off running an HD video stream for hours, having the following results in hours:mm:seconds:

  • Chrome: 4:19:50
  • Firefox: 5:09:30
  • Opera: 6:18:33
  • Microsoft Edge: 7:22:07
The video link is here,if anyone wants to see it.Here are the raw statistics:

As per the results,Microsoft edge almost played the video stream almost 3 hours more which is 70 percent longer than chrome.Microsoft also claimed that for non-video tasks too,the browser works 36-50 percent more. The tasks include reading, opening and closing tabs, browsing etc etc.

Further more, they have released an Insight on data collected by telemetry from millions of Windows 10 PC's.The following was written in the blog post:
"We designed Microsoft Edge from the ground up to prioritize power efficiency and deliver more battery life, without any special battery saving mode or changes to the default settings."

One of the complaints from Microsoft edge is less number of features for the general availability release. This is going to end soon as Microsoft has added ton of new features in Edge in the redstone release, called the Anniversary update to be released in late July this year. For a complete change-log,you can refer the following article:

[CHANGELOG]What is new in Anniversary update till now from Windows 10 v1511

Battery improvements with the Anniversary update

Microsoft has shown some of the battery improvements also coming with the Anniversary update yesterday in the blog post which are:

  • More efficient background tabs:Modern web apps run JavaScript in the background—checking for new email, analyzing ad metrics, running animations, whatever—even when you’re not viewing the page in a browser. So with the Anniversary Update, Edge only executes background JavaScript timers once per second in background tabs. Microsoft says it sometimes results in saving 90 percent of energy.cpu-utilization-1024x327

  • More efficient Flash:In the anniversary update, flash is controlled via a separate process rather than the built in one.The benifit of this being that if the flash is hogging the resources,it would be disabled without impacting the page.
  • Battery friendly user Interface:The UI of Edge has been designed as such that it requires very less energy.Animations are a large battery eater and they have been designed efficiently in Edge.
  • Networking through Windows:Some new features are being introduced in the Windows 10 anniversary update that optimize the network that would result in faster page loading and in turn,a better performance and less battery use, says Microsoft.

Get the Installation media file before the upgrade for future purposes in Windows 10

Whenever you do an upgrade like windows to another windows Edition like upgrading Windows 10 to Windows 10 v1511 or you upgrade from Windows 7 or 8 to Windows 10,windows update is the primary method of delivery. If you are downloading Windows 10 through Windows update,an encrypted installation file is stored in your windows folder which you can convert and use as an Installation media file for future purposes.

Here's how to

After the Windows update has completed of the Windows setup,a copy of Windows update setup file is saved in the form of Electronic service delivery widely called Install.ESD.ESD file is just an encrypted copy of ISO file which is used for Installation of Windows.
To get the ESD file do the following:
  1. Press Windows key + R to open run dialog box.
  2. Type: C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources
  3. Copy the Install.esd file from the folder to a separate folder let's say D:/ESD.

Download the Decrypter

Download ESD to ISO decryptor

The download should automatically start after you click the link.

  1. After the download completes, extract the ZIP to the same folder where the ESD is located.Double click the file and click extract on the top:
  2. Change the path to D:/ESD folder:
  3. Now the tool ESDtoISO and the Install.esd file is in the same folder. This should be the tree structure:
  4. Now right click the file named decrypt-decryptESD and click Run as administrator:
  5. As we want to create an Installation media callled ISO file,we need to run the first option-Create standard file with standard Install.wim
  6. Press option one and then wait for the process to finish.
  7. When finished, you will get a screen with task finished, press any key to continue:
That's it.Copy the ISO file where ever you like and use it for reinstalling purposes. This method is quite useful when you have a slower internet connection/metered connection and you do not want to download ISO again.

Microsoft releases a tool to clean Install windows 10 easily

Microsoft releases a tool to clean Install windows 10 easily

Microsoft has officially released a new tool for Windows Insiders allowing for the clean installation of Windows 10. It was informed earlier by Microsoft not too long ago and starting with Build 14342 it is usable.
To use this tool, you need to be on the Windows Insider preview version,MS says 14342 and later can be used. This tool would install a clean copy of  the Windows insider preview. The tool first downloads the ISO from the servers and then does a clean Install. However,as MS doesn't provide fast ring ISO's,the builds might be older:
The build installed by this tool is not guaranteed to be the latest build available to Insiders, and at times may install a Windows 10 build that is older that you had previously.

Only 3 languages are supported as of now,English,Japanese and Chinese. Also there is no guarantees that it would transfer digital licenses.
During this preview period, we cannot guarantee your digital licenses, digital content associated with applications, or other digital entitlements for applications will be carried through after using the tool, which may impact your ability to use paid-for apps or apps-related content.  For this reason, we don’t recommend installing the preview on any PC where you wish to ensure all of your applications and application-related content (including Microsoft applications such as Office) remain properly installed and licensed.

Download the tool:

After a clean Install, everything is erased. So backup your files before doing it.

Do a little effort now to get Windows 10 upgrade for free after the free offer ends

With the introduction to windows 10 last summer,Microsoft provided Windows 10 for free to Windows 7 and 8 running devices for 1 year. The idea was simple-they want to make windows 10 run on one billion devices.
But now as there is only less than 50 days left when the free upgrade offer ends, the people which want to shift to Windows 10 should do the upgrade now.Unfortunately, some are in dilemma right now.
So I will discuss a method now which allows you to get Windows 10 for free even after the free upgrade offer ends.It is perfectly legal but requires a little effort from you.
The catch is that when you upgrade to Windows 10,your existing license becomes a dual Windows 10 and Windows 7/8.X license and either one of them can be installed once you do a clean Install.Windows 10 is activated through digital entitlement and the other one is activated through a license key.So you need to upgrade to windows 10 first and then restore your earlier version of Windows.
So here are the steps:

Create a system image of your existing OS

A system image is an exact copy of your system running at the time when it is created and  beautiful way of restoring your windows whenever you want.A system image carries all your data of the drives+also preserves activation.
To create a system Image in Windows:

  • open control panel and then navigate to Backup and Restore.
  • Click Create system Image on the left pane.
  • Select the drive where the Image is to be saved. It can either be the same Hard drive or an external drive:
  • Now click on next.
  • Now windows would automatically select the drives for the image.Click on Next:
  • Click on start Backup.

Upgrade to windows 10

When the backup is finished, the next step is to upgrade to Windows 10.For this,Download the media creation tool and select upgrade to Windows 10,as shown:
Then select upgrade This PC.

When you have finished the upgrade, confirm that you have digital entitlement in Activation. For that go to Settings>Update and security>Activation and see.

Rollback to Earlier version of Windows

To get your Earlier version of Windows back,Either do a rollback or restore the system Image we created Earlier.
Rollback using the built in facility provided: you want to use Windows 10's built in feature to rollback, use the following steps:
  • Navigate to Settings app
  • Open Update and security
  • On the left pane, click recovery.
  • Click Get started under Go back to Windows 7/8
The built in rollback feature is somewhat less reliable and people often face problems afterwards in the earlier Windows version.

Restore the system Image:To restore the system Image we created Earlier, use the following guide:
  • Open the recovery tab from settings as explained above.
  • Under Advanced startup, click Restart now.
  • Then a blue screen would open somewhat like this:
  • Click on troubleshoot and then Click Adanced options>System Image recovery
  • Then select the system image and restore.
  • Your old Windows would be restored.
That's it.You can successfully upgrade to windows 10 in future for free.

Download default windows 7 games for Windows 10

Earlier versions of Windows had a quite nice games like card games and others. But with windows 10,microsoft has removed all other non-card games present in earlier version of Windows except the Card games. The card games have been integrated in one Modern app called as "Microsoft Solitare collection" in Windows 10.not all of the games are available in Solitare collection(nearly all have been renamed.)
But thankfully a package containing all these games is available which installs without a hitch in Windows 10 and provides exactly the same games available in earlier version of Windows.

then select the games you wish to install:

Click on Next and click finish when finished.

You just need to run the setup after the download and the games would be present in Start menu>All apps>Games folder.

PS. This package works in Anniversary update builds too,

How to get more control over Windows update in Windows 10

Windows update is an important component of windows which checks for updates for device drivers, core OS,security patches etc.Updates or upgrades-all happen in windows only through Windows update.Newer updates are checked and Installed at some specified time.
Installing these updates is important as it offers more stability to the OS and security issues are also fixed.
Earlier Operating systems allowed some more flexible options to windows update like Installing them when the user presses Check for updates button and then the user had to confirm the download and Installation.
But in Windows 10 Microsoft has removed the ability to manually check and download the windows updates. The windows updates in windows 10 automatically check and download the updates as soon as they become available.Sometimes this is problematic for the user(for example a faulty driver gets installed.).Also,Windows sometimes schedules restarts when the user is working that might lead to loss of work.
To overcome this issue in Windows 10,there are some workarounds which are as under:

Set your Network connection as metered:

Internet service providers can charge by the amount of data used (the amount of data sent and received by your PC). That's called a metered Internet connection.
When your Internet connection is set as metered, windows would ask you before downloading the updates. It would also show approximate data required to download the update.
To set Wi-Fi connection as metered:
  • Open the settings app and then navigate to Netork and Internet.
  • Now under Wifi Settings click Advanced Options.
  • Then set the Slider to ON for metered connections.

To set Ethernet as metered connection:
Setting an Ethernet connection as metered requires a registry Edit. This is covered here:

Hide Updates using Troubleshooter tool:

Microsoft has released an official troubleshooter tool to hide windows updates. This is quite handy to hide unwanted windows updates.
When you run the tool, click hide updates and it would show a list of available updates.Tick the updates to hide that ones.To un-hide,run the tool again and click "un-hide updates" at the first prompt.

Use Registry Edit to set the update settings to Check for download and Install manually(Windows 10 Pro Edition only)

Now an Advanced method.Using registry edit we can set the windows update settings to Check for updates but confirm before the download.Follow the steps:

  1. Open Run dialog box using Windows key+R.Type in regedit and press OK.
  2. Now on the left hand side navigate to the following key:

  3. Create a new key under Windows and name it WindowsUpdate
  4. Create a new key under Windows update and set the name as AU.The final would look like this:
  5. Now right Click AU and select new DWORD and name it AUOptions and set its value to 2 (to notify to download and notify to Install).Alternatively change the value according to this table:

  6. 3 to auto download and notify for install,
4 to auto download and schedule the install and
5 To allow local admin to choose setting.

This method works only in Pro Editions, not the home one.

Completely disable the windows update service

To completely turn off the windows update service, you need to disable Windows update service.Follow the steps:
  • iPress Windows key+R to open Run dialog box.
  • Type in Services.msc and on the right hand side right click Windows update service.
  • Navigate to Properties and set startup type to disabled
  • Now windows would never check for updates.
An error code of 80070422 would be displayed.

Powershell method(manual Installation)

The last method is Powershell method. In this the selective updates can be installed. For this first of all set your connection as metered connection so that windows doesn't automatically download the updates using the above methods.
Then proceed as following article:
That's it.Let me know if there are any other methods.........
