Microsoft to extend Windows to a common shell

Windows 10, which is reportedly the last operating system from Microsoft, is designed to run on a wide variety of devices, including Xbox, HoloLens, PCs, and mobile devices. Although the features may differ across devices, they share many fundamental elements, particularly in terms of the user interface. The most significant of these shared elements are OneCore and the Universal Windows Platform (UWP).
A recent report from Windows Central indicates that Microsoft is working on a standard Windows shell, which will become the next universal element of Windows 10. The Windows shell comprises a collection of user interface elements that allow users to run applications and manage the operating system. On Windows 10, the desktop interface includes elements such as the taskbar and icons. While desktop and tablet devices primarily utilize this shell, other devices, like the HoloLens, use a different shell. Microsoft aims to unify these experiences by combining them into a single shell.
Common Windows shellAccording to the report, the Software giant is working on a new shell called Composable shell that can scales down itself on different UIs and desktops. On Windows 10 Mobile devices, this will lead to Continuum improvements with a UI that resembles the classic Windows 10 desktop. At Microsoft’s Ignite 2016 conference, the company gave a hint of the same.
The Composable Shell is reportedly scheduled to be shown first with one or two feature upgrades in the future, for Mobile and subsequently on desktop and Laptop. Therefore, we shouldn’t expect it in the Creator’s update this year. This is a welcome change, as the UIs will resemble those of a laptop or desktop when this feature arrives.
